Travel has definitely taught me what I actually reach for every day—whether I’m on a plane, walking through a new city, or just running errands at home. Over time, I’ve found a handful of items that start as “travel essentials” but end up living in my purse all year long. They keep me organized, prepared, and honestly a little less stressed. Here are the six things I always carry.
1. My Crossbody Travel Purse
I’m picky when it comes to bags, but this one has become my daily go-to. It has a crossbody strap for hands-free convenience, a zipper for security (so important when traveling), and tons of pockets that make organization easy. Everything has a place, which helps me find what I need quickly whether I’m boarding a plane or checking out at Target. It’s lightweight, practical, and surprisingly stylish—basically the perfect everyday purse that doubles as a travel bag.

2. Two Pairs of Sunglasses
I never leave home without sunglasses, especially when I travel. I usually pack one inexpensive pair and one nicer pair. The cheaper pair is great for throwing in my bag without worrying, and the nicer pair is perfect for when I want something a little more polished. Between the two, I’m covered if one gets scratched or misplaced. Plus, sunglasses just make any travel day easier and any outfit look put-together.

3. Hand Sanitizer
This one is simple but essential. I keep a cheap little bottle from Walmart in my bag at all times. It’s nothing fancy, but it works and it’s small enough that it doesn’t take up space. I use it after airports, shopping, before meals, or anytime I don’t have access to a sink. It’s one of those items I forget about until I really need it.

4. An AirTag
This tiny thing gives me so much peace of mind. I keep an AirTag in my purse when I travel—especially on flights—but I’ve started leaving it inside my everyday bag too. It helps me track my purse if I misplace it and gives me that little extra security when I’m in crowded places. If you’re someone who stresses about losing things, this is a game changer.

5. A Foldable Pouch That Turns Into a Bag
This might be my sneaky favorite. I carry a small pouch that unfolds into a full tote bag. It takes up almost no space, but comes in handy constantly—souvenirs, extra snacks, kids’ things, shopping… you name it. It’s the perfect “just in case” item I didn’t know I needed until I started carrying it.

6. A Small Hairbrush
Last but definitely not least, my mini hairbrush lives in my purse. Travel days and long outings can leave my hair looking flat or wind-blown, and I like having something compact to freshen up before photos or dinner. It also ends up saving the day for my kids on trips.

7. AirPods
These are a lifesaver for travel and everyday life. Whether I’m listening to music, catching up on a podcast, or taking a call on the go, AirPods keep me connected without having to dig for headphones. They’re small enough to always stay in my purse and make long flights, car rides, or even waiting in line much more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts
These six items started out as travel essentials but have quietly become part of my everyday routine. They keep me prepared, organized, and comfortable whether I’m halfway across the world or just heading out the door. If you’re building your own travel-friendly purse setup, these are the things I’d recommend starting with.
