For the past 20 years, family Christmas pajamas have been one of my favorite family traditions. It’s funny how something that starts small turns into a nostalgic yearly moment you look forward to—and how it naturally changes as your family grows, your style shifts, and new ideas pop up.
Some years we’ve been super coordinated, and other years we’ve just gone with what felt right in the moment. And honestly? That’s what makes it fun.
How Our Christmas Pajama Tradition Has Evolved
The Early Years: Lots of PJs (and Then… Slippers!)
In the beginning, pajamas were the go-to—every style, every print, every price point. But eventually we hit that moment where we thought:
“We have so many pajamas… maybe we mix it up?”
So one year, we switched things up and did slippers instead of pajamas. It was something cozy, fun, and still felt festive without adding another full set of PJs to the drawers. The kids LOVED that year.
Growing Families = Changing Plans
As our family expanded, the cost of buying matching sets for everyone naturally grew too. That’s when we started rotating ideas—sometimes matching, sometimes coordinating, sometimes totally different but still in the same spirit.
I’ve learned that matching doesn’t always mean identical. Coordinating colors or themes works just as well (and makes shopping so much easier).
This Year’s Christmas Pajama Lineup
This year has a fun mix of matching, coordinating, and pieces everyone can actually wear beyond December.
✨ The Little Kids
The littlest ones are getting matching Santa pajamas—adorable, festive, and exactly the kind of thing that looks precious in photos. My daughter’s pair is a beige set that coordinates perfectly with the kids’ Santa print without being too busy.

✨ My Son & His Cousin
These two are wearing brown shirts with the Santa graphic, so they still tie into the theme but with a more understated look. Very “big kid friendly.” My son is wearing some brown joggers that he already has.

✨ Me
I still love having pajamas for our little family of four, so I picked out a full brown pajama set for myself—neutral, wearable, and something I can use long after Christmas morning. I am loving the Terra Brown from Gap, I have a sweater set in that color.

✨ My Husband
He’s keeping it easy with a shirt from last year and a pair of beige lounge pants that fit perfectly with the rest of the palette. I also might buy my dad this T-shirt.
Color Themes I Wanted (Maybe Next Year!)
I really had my eye on doing a blue and burgundy theme this year—either all blue pajamas or a rich burgundy set for the whole family. But by the time I started shopping, lots of things were selling out, and I also wanted to coordinate with what my sister was getting for the younger kids.
So that idea is going on the list for another year. The good thing is:
GAP and Old Navy always have great options, especially for matching family pajamas, so I know I’ll revisit those colors later.

Looking Back at Some of Our Favorite Years
It’s fun to see how many different vibes we’ve had:
- Beige & Reindeer Pajamas: One year the kids had reindeer sets with a cute beige base—still one of my favorites.
- “Cheers” Sweatshirt Year: I bought all the girls/women matching Cheers sweatshirts, and the guys wore matching t-shirts. Simple but adorable.
- Pink & Red Santa Year: Me and my daughter had striped pants with pink in them, and the little kids wore pink shirts with a red Santa. A fun twist on traditional red and green.
- Classic Red & White Stripes: The kids had the candy-stripe look, and I bought myself black pajamas to coordinate without being too loud.
- New Year’s Eve Matching: Last year the girls all had black pajamas for NYE, which I might do again… or continue with our brown/beige theme. If I go that route, I’ll need to grab something coordinating for my niece and nephew.

Closing Thoughts
What I love most is that this tradition has never been about perfection. Some years we match, some years we coordinate, and some years we just pick what feels right—and every single year ends up full of memories.
As long as everyone is cozy, happy, and feeling festive, it’s a win.
Here’s to another year of comfy clothes, cozy mornings, and Christmas magic.
