How I Refresh My Christmas Decor Each Year With New Accent Colors (On a Budget!)

One of my favorite parts of decorating for Christmas each year is giving my home a fresh look—without replacing everything I already own. I love the tradition and nostalgia of pulling out the same décor each season, but choosing a different highlight color palette keeps things fun, new, and creative. Last year I focused on red and black, and this year I’m switching things up with dusty blue and burgundy.

And the best part? I give myself a $200 holiday décor budget for things like ribbon, wrapping paper, and a few accent pieces. It keeps me intentional, and honestly, it pushes me to get creative with what I already have.

Start With the Basics: Ribbon & Wrapping Paper

My biggest impact every year comes from two simple things: ribbon and wrapping paper. They end up in so many places—on the tree, on gifts, even tucked into garlands.

This year I found the prettiest Red and Ivory Vintage Toile Art Christmas Wrapping Paper at Walmart. It leans more burgundy than red, which worked perfectly for my color choice. I still use my big roll of brown kraft paper that has lasted us years—it’s the perfect neutral base for any color scheme.

On the tree, I tied dusty blue and burgundy ribbon, and it instantly pulled the whole theme together. Just that one change made the space feel new.

Carry the Colors Into Each Room

Once I choose my colors, my goal is simply to add a touch of that palette in every room—nothing overwhelming, just hints that make the whole house feel cohesive.

Living Room

  • Christmas tree with burgundy + dusty blue ribbon
  • Wrapped gifts that tie everything together
  • If you want to keep it simple: one pillow, one blanket, and the tree ribbon alone can change the whole mood

Kitchen & Dining Room

I found the prettiest Burgundy Mini Glitter Gold Edge Honeycomb Lanterns that I may hang in the kitchen window or above the dining room buffet. They feel festive but not heavy.

I also love the idea of adding Brown, Burgundy, and White Paper Star Lanterns—and painting the white star blue for a DIY touch that matches the theme.

And this year I’m bringing out the blue plates from my great-grandparents to hang on the wall. They’re meaningful, beautiful, and they fit perfectly with the color palette.

Adding Texture & Florals

This season I’ve been loving combining faux florals and greenery with the new colors.
Some favorites:

  • Burgundy Velvet Christmas Bow – big, classic, beautiful; perfect on an old sled with greenery (I may try this in our finished basement!)
  • Dusty Blue Faux Silk Mums – pretty tucked into garlands or wreaths
  • Evergreen Natural Feel Norfolk Wreath with a Burgundy Bow – I’m tempted to use this above my daughter’s bed

These small touches add richness without feeling cluttered.

Bedrooms & Basement

Even if you don’t want to redecorate full rooms, adding one or two items goes a long way:

  • A cozy throw blanket in blue or burgundy
  • A wreath with a matching bow
  • A simple ornament displayed on a tray or bedside table
  • Blue or burgundy pillowcases for the season

It’s subtle but still festive.

A Few Favorites I’m Loving This Year

I fell in love with the Christmas Roll-Up Plaid Tree Collar in Blue—even though it’s more red than burgundy, it still works beautifully within the overall theme.

Target also has an adorable blue heart ornament this year that fits right in.

And Walmart’s Christmas décor selection really impressed me—especially their blue ceramic houses. I sadly don’t have the perfect place for them, but they’re worth a look if blue is your color this year.

Easy Ways to Add Your New Colors

If you want to refresh your holiday look without replacing everything, here are quick changes that make a big difference:

  • Ribbon (on the tree, wreaths, garland, chairs)
  • Ornaments
  • Throw pillows or blankets
  • Little bottle-brush trees in your theme colors
  • Wrapping paper
  • DIY painted stars, houses, or wood décor
  • Wreath bows
  • Lanterns or window hangings
  • Florals in matching shades

You don’t need to buy all new décor—you just need a color story.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to reinvent your Christmas décor every year to make it feel fresh. By picking one or two accent colors, being intentional with where you place them, and staying within a budget, your home can feel new, festive, and totally “you” each holiday season.

I love pulling out my old favorites and simply layering in this year’s color story of dusty blue and burgundy. It feels elevated, cozy, and just a little different—exactly what I want each season.
