When the Plan Changes: A Real-Life Back-to-School Outfit Pivot

Sometimes the outfit you plan and the outfit you actually wear end up being two very different things—and that’s okay.

I thought I’d walk you through the process I went through recently while planning one of my back-to-school outfits. I had it all visualized: I styled it out, created an Amazon lookalike version, and then tried the whole thing on. But once it was actually on my body? It didn’t feel quite right.

Let me explain…

The Original Outfit Plan:

I started with a beige tee with a soft blue print, one of my favorite old Free People pieces. I paired it with brown wide-leg pants with a subtle pink piping down the side from Anthropologie (also a past-season item), and added my well-loved Birkenstock-style clogs. To top it off, I planned to layer a brown cardigan to tie the whole look together.

Visually, it worked! In my head—and laid out on my bed—it felt perfect: grounded, soft, and creative without being over-the-top.

The Amazon Lookalike:

I recreated the vibe using affordable finds:

  • Blue striped tee instead of the graphic Free People version
  • Brown trouser pants (no pink piping, but still great structure)
  • Clogs from Amazon that match the look and feel of my Birks
  • The same brown cardigan as in my original plan

It looked great side-by-side. BUT…

What Actually Happened:

When I tried it all on, I realized… the cardigan wasn’t working. It felt a little bulky and threw off the proportions. I swapped it out for my denim jacket—a favorite, though admittedly a bit snug (oops). Still, it looked better.

So I hunted down a denim jacket, which fits the vibe but has a more comfortable cut. My jacket pictured doesn’t quite fit anymore. I’ve linked that jacket in case you’re in the same situation where your “old favorite” isn’t quite fitting like it used to.

Also? My Birkenstocks, while comfy, are showing their age. I’ve cleaned them, but they still look a little tired. I found a couple great replacements—an affordable dupe on Amazon and some Clarks. I’ve linked both!

The Takeaway:

Outfit planning is a process. Sometimes everything looks great on a hanger or in your head… but when it’s actually on, it doesn’t feel right. That’s part of getting dressed—and definitely part of teacher life.

So pivot. Tweak. Swap the cardigan for the jacket. Change the shoes. Order a better-fitting version. Dressing for school should make you feel good—not just look good.

Thanks for coming along on this little style journey with me 💛
