One of my favorite things about having a teenage daughter is finding clothes we both love. We don’t usually buy the exact same outfit—instead, we pick the same style in different colors so our personalities still shine through. We have yet to actually match on the same day.
It’s a fun way to coordinate without feeling like we’re wearing matching uniforms. Here are five of our favorite summer looks!
1. Checkered Gingham Shorts
These have become one of my favorite summer outfits because they’re so easy to throw on.
- Mine: Brown gingham shorts with a khaki t-shirt and my favorite Sanuk flip-flops.
- Hers: Blue gingham shorts with a soft dusty purple t-shirt and colorful Teva-inspired sandals.
The same outfit, two totally different looks!

2. Umbro Shorts for Casual Summer Days
Nothing says summer like athletic shorts that are comfortable enough for everything from errands to walks around town.
- Mine: Umbro shorts from Urban Outfitters paired with a simple white t-shirt and my well-loved Converse.
- Hers: The same Umbro shorts with her Athleta “Power of She” t-shirt and a pair of all-black Converse.
It’s a sporty look that works for both a mom and a teen.

3. Striped Capri Pants
These pants are comfortable enough for travel, shopping, or grabbing coffee, and they’re one of those pieces we both reach for often.
- Mine: Dark brown capri pants with black side stripe, a black Amazon t-shirt, and my favorite Sanuk flip-flops.
- Hers: Purple capri pants with white stripes, a classic white t-shirt, and white sandals.
Same style, completely different color palette.

4. Fun Striped Pants
We both love a bold pair of striped pants, but each of us styles them a little differently.
- Mine: Black-and-white striped pants with my Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirt and Converse.
- Hers: Pink and orange striped pants with her “All You Need Is Love” Beatles t-shirt from Target and black Converse.
It’s one of those outfits that’s comfortable but still has plenty of personality.

5. Free People Shorts
These are probably one of our favorite summer purchases because they’re lightweight and easy to dress up or down.
- Mine: Turquoise and burgundy Free People shorts with an Amazon cutout t-shirt and Sanuk flip-flops.
- Hers: Brown and yellow Free People shorts with the same Amazon cutout t-shirt style and her favorite sandals.
They’re perfect for hot summer days, vacations, or just relaxing outside.

Matching…But Still Ourselves
One thing I’ve discovered is that matching doesn’t have to mean identical. Choosing the same pieces in different colors lets both of our personalities come through while still making getting dressed together fun.
As my daughter has gotten older, it’s become one of my favorite little traditions. We get to share styles we both love while still making each outfit our own. It’s comfortable, practical, and a sweet way to enjoy this season of life together.
